General Questions
-
The simple answer is yes. If you’re an actor and your headshot is more than two years old, you already know it’s time for a new one. Your headshot is your business card and helps you get work. For everyone else who spends time online, the answer is still yes. You control how people see you online, and first impressions matter. Your headshot acts like your personal logo and is a key part of your brand. Whether you’re networking on LinkedIn or looking for a date on Hinge or Bumble, people notice your profile picture. We live in a digital world, and using an old wedding photo just doesn’t work anymore. I suggest updating your headshot every two years.
When choosing a photographer, look for someone who specialises in headshots, especially for actors. Review their portfolio to make sure their style fits the look you want. Read reviews or get recommendations from other actors. It helps to have a quick call to make sure you feel comfortable working with them. Before your session, prepare by thinking about the image you want to convey, bring a few different outfit options, and get a good night’s sleep so you look fresh. Being prepared will help you get the most out of your headshot session.

We offer clients an amazing product. It is truly second to none. We don’t just photograph people; we educate and learn from them. The process is always evolving. No two headshots are identical. We see things differently. This is not just a photograph. This is your personal logo. It must stand out in the crowd. It must say “I’m the one.” It must be an honest picture of who you are. We are authentic in what we do. We believe it makes a difference.

You have to trust your photographer. Many people come into my studio very nervous. Some even liken it to going to the dentist. But I won’t poke your gums or drill your teeth. We’re just going to hang out. I’ll probably try to make you laugh. I will ask you to make faces. You may feel silly in some poses. It’s all for good reason. I’m not just your photographer. I’m also your expression coach. If you can be coached, you can achieve a great headshot. If you come to my studio prepared, confident, and ready for direction, you won’t leave without a great headshot. At Daniel Sommer Photography, we guarantee 100% satisfaction. I do free consultations. If you don’t have total faith in my ability, come meet me. If you are still unsure, talk to other photographers. I might not be the right one for you.
MUSIC
Create a playlist for your session. We have Spotify and Bluetooth speakers at the studio. Pick songs that inspire you. Keep the playlist upbeat. Slow songs will drain your energy. Workout playlists work well.
MOISTURISE
A little moisturiser helps prepare your skin for the session. Moisturise well the night before and the morning of your appointment. If you hired a make-up artist, do not apply any make-up before the session. -
“Look” is photographer jargon. It means the number of outfits you wear during your session. The fee usually increases for each extra look. Most corporate clients need a 1-look session.
Corporate Headshot clients want images for their websites or LinkedIn profiles. The usual goal is to show confidence and approachability. Corporate clients rarely care about showing diversity or range, unlike actors. Don’t forget to read our guide on what to wear for corporate headshots. We will send that via email.
Actors and models often want extra looks. This depends on your casting. What roles do you usually get? Which ones do you want? Different looks help with different casting choices. Most actors buy our 3-look package. The 3-look session is longer to allow for clothing changes. More outfit changes give professionals more options. Instead of using one headshot for everything, choose the best one for each role. Women often change their hairstyle or makeup for each look. Men may wear stubble for their first look, then shave for the others. This is basic marketing for actors. Extra looks let you target your marketing. Directors can picture you in more roles.

Yes, we travel for our headshot sessions. We serve all major citys like Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adeleide and Perth. We are also traveling internationally and have worked in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Oslo, Stockholm, Zurich and Singapore.
While we get fantastic results in our studios in Sydney using the controlled environment in our studio, our lighting, and the studio elements in the shots. We can easily repeat this on location.
We offer on-site Photoshoots if you have a unique environment or need executive portraits. Headshots need a lot of space. Not every location is good for this kind of photography.
Most on-location shoots include a site visit. We assess the space and decide what we need to bring. This ensures we can deliver our usual service.
All shoots under $1000 have a $300 travel fee.

To give you the best product, I create a comfortable, welcoming studio. This helps us get the results we want every time. Shooting on the street or in a park offers little comfort or consistency. Outdoors, we have to deal with the weather and changing light. This distracts from focusing on your camera presence.
Nearly all my work is shot inside my comfortable studio.
I want to be able to give you a consistent quality shoot day or evening, rain or shine. -
There are times when we use custom backgrounds for very specific corporate clients (e.g., blue/pink/purple for candy store staff). Office backgrounds with the city or harbour view in the photo are also very popular.
Generally speaking, though, the best headshots have little to nothing to do with the colour or type of background and everything to do with the energy you're giving the camera.
White, grey and black do very little to distract from your face and everything to complement it.
Hair and Makeup FAQ
-
If you hire our make-up artist services, they all come prepared to help you with your hair, but at the end of the day, an up-do would be inappropriate for a headshot session. You know your hair better than anyone. This picture is intended to represent you on your best day. You know how you want your hair to look, and you’re probably going to do a better job on your own hair than a stranger. We’re here to assist if necessary, but we prefer to let you tackle your hair on your own.
-
Need is such a strong word. In a perfect world, all women who schedule headshot sessions with me would use my make-up team. Doing your make-up for a headshot isn’t really the same thing as doing your make-up for going to work. My team is amazing at what they do, and I can always tell from the finished product whether someone hired my make-up artist or did it herself. Our team of talented MUA’s understand our lighting techniques and how the camera perceives colour. All that said, the answer is no: I don’t require you to use my team or a makeup artist. I do feel it makes a difference, but it’s not a deal-breaker. If you’ve hired a make-up artist for your headshot session, please come to the studio without any make-up on and be sure to moisturise well. In the event you choose to do your own make-up, please reference these tips here. I typically prefer that men not wear any makeup during their headshot session.
-
I recommend a makeup artist to all my female clients. It’s not required, but you will look better in your pictures. I’m thrilled you realise the importance of a corporate headshot, and if you’re going to invest the time and money to do it, you might as well do it right. Let’s be honest, it’s fun being pampered, and why not make a day of it? You’ll look better, you’ll feel better, and the final product will be better. If you’ve hired a make-up artist for your headshot session, please come to the studio without any make-up on and be sure to moisturise well. In the event you choose to do your own make-up, please reference these tips here. I typically prefer that men not wear any makeup during their headshot session.
-
I generally prefer that men not wear make-up. We have a product here that removes oil from your face and reduces shine. That’s usually all I recommend. If you have specific reasons for wanting a make-up artist, we’ll bring one in, but I think most guys with make-up on look like guys wearing make-up.

A haircut is a great idea before a headshot session, but not the day before. A little trim will help your hair look healthier in your images; if possible, cut it at least a week before your headshot session. Sometimes, after a haircut, we’re left with tan lines and hair that isn’t quite sure how it wants to be styled yet. By giving yourself a week, you’ll have some time to learn how your hair lies best and how you want to style it. Also, if you hate your haircut, you'll have ample time to reschedule with me if necessary and push your date back a few weeks.
-
If you’re going to shave, do it well. I’m constantly shocked by how bad a job some men do when shaving. We are shooting ultra high definition. You will see every pore. I know you can do it! Just take a little extra time shaving before your headshot session. If you’re the kind of guy who shaves and then has a 5 o’clock shadow 30 minutes later, go ahead and bring your razor and shave here. There are those of us who can grow facial hair and those of us who can’t. You’re likely to be stuck with this picture for 2 years. Be honest with yourself about your facial hair and decide accordingly. Some men who opt for larger headshot packages will shoot a couple of looks, clean-shaven and a couple bearded.
Clothing FAQ
-
You are welcome to bring as many outfit options as you wish; many clients bring a wide range of choices to ensure they are well-prepared. It is better to have more options than not enough. Only bring clothing that fits you well and that you feel confident in. If you would like my input, I am happy to advise you. If you are undecided, I can assist with the final selection. If you do not currently own an outfit you feel comfortable in, consider purchasing something new, leave the tags on, and we can work around them during your session, allowing you to return the item afterwards if needed. Please note that your session is booked by “looks.” If you have reserved a 1-look headshot session, you will be photographed in only one outfit. If you are unsure what constitutes a “look,” please review the explanation provided.

There are only a few essential guidelines for your headshot session attire. Refer to the checklist below in the 'What should I wear to my headshot session?' section for detailed recommendations to ensure you are well-prepared and appropriately dressed.
•Wear something you like, and that fits you well. If you don’t have anything you like, purchase something new, leave the tags on if you wish, as we can work around them, and you can return the item later.
• Ensure that your clothing is not wrinkled and is free of pet hair. Animal hair is not attractive unless it’s on an animal.
• Avoid black and white clothing, as these colours are too contrasty, especially the combination of a black suit with a white shirt. This should be avoided at all costs.
• Steer clear of loud prints, as they can distract from your face. Earth tones, gemstone colours, and grey tend to work best for headshots.
• Consider the sleeve length: short-sleeve or sleeveless shirts can be problematic unless you are confident about your arms.
• Corporate clients should dress as they would for a client meeting. For business casual industries, a button-down or polo shirt works well. For more formal industries, a suit and tie are appropriate.
• Actors are recommended to keep things simple, such as solid colour T-shirts, layering, or interesting necklines. The key is not to let your clothing overshadow you in front of the camera.
• If you feel better in heels, wear your favourite pair. They will not be visible in the shot, but they may help boost your confidence and presence.
Consult this checklist before your session to ensure you arrive well-prepared and confident in your choices.
-
V-necks, scoop necks, and open collars tend to elongate the neck and frame the face beautifully. Avoid turtlenecks or very tight crew necks because they can shorten the neck and make the head appear disconnected. Make sure your neckline choice matches your industry or personal brand for the most effective headshot.
-
Unless you happen to sell jewellery, I recommend keeping accessories to a minimum. Earrings shouldn’t dangle. Small studs are great. Necklaces shouldn’t be “chunky” or “blingy”. These shots are headshots. Less is more. The product is you, not the fashion. Fashion is meant to accentuate you and your features, not distract from them.
-
Yes. Camera lenses are unforgiving of wrinkles and creases, especially under studio lighting. Always steam or iron your outfits the night before and transport them on hangers rather than folded in a bag to keep them looking sharp on the day of the shoot. If any wrinkles appear at the last minute, bring a travel steamer or wrinkle-release spray for quick touch-ups at the location. Our Studio also has a steamers on-site, so you can fix unexpected creases and make sure you look your best.
During and after your shoot FAQ
-
All headshot and portrait sessions can be customised to suit your needs. We generally start with a few introductory exercises to get to know each other and get you comfortable in front of the camera. This includes and is followed by what I refer to as ‘coaching’. This ‘coaching’ is just a way for me to take you through some tips and tricks for taking a perfect photo that not only speeds up the whole process, but also applies to ‘real world’ situations, such as personal photos, ‘selfies’, group photos, etc. Our main goal throughout the shoot is to make you feel as comfortable as possible, have a lot of fun and ensure you leave with great images.
-
During all sessions, studio or on-location, we shoot tethered to a computer or a tablet, so your images are readily available for viewing and basic modification straight away. This allows me to coach you into the best poses and expressions, ensuring you get the best headshots possible.
-
At the end of your photo session, we will quickly take you through the basics of using our super-easy online photo proofing gallery. Shortly after the shoot, you will receive an email with a link to your personalised and secure gallery, along with your username and password. This online photo proofing gallery cannot be searched or seen by anyone without your direct permission (send your login credentials to friends and family for advice in picking your images).
Depending on your package, you can order one or more photos. Write comments or notes on photos you like as you review; this may help you select.
Once you have selected your specified number of images, our retoucher will produce the final images. A fee of $ 75 AUD applies to any additional images. -
Retouching can take up to 10 business days, but this depends heavily on the size and scope of your project. The final images will be delivered through our client portal or via an email download link. Be sure to save all files in a safe place. The download link expires in 10 days.
24hr. Rush Delivery – $75/image
-
The photos uploaded to the online proofing gallery are of low quality and are NOT to be downloaded and used for any purpose. Once you have selected the specified number of images, our professional retoucher will enhance the images to ensure the best possible quality. A fee may apply to ‘rush jobs’ for faster turnaround; this fee is at the retoucher's discretion. The additional rush fee is currently $ 75 AUD per image.
You will receive a download link to your final images (both high-resolution for printing and low-resolution for internet and email use), allowing unlimited downloads for up to 10 days (after this time, the link will expire). The final images will be delivered through our client portal or through an email download link. Dropbox or Google Drive are available upon request. -
We do not print our headshots ourselves.
The lab we recommend is:
Pixel Perfect
TAFE Ultimo Campus, Building H19 Mary Anne St., Ultimo NSW 2007
02-9319 0455
https://pixelperfect.com.au/
The final presentation is everything. Go to a lab that specialises in printing headshots. You’re only hurting yourself if you don’t. Print matte or lustre, NOT glossy. Glossy will make you look like an amateur from a mile away. Using cheap prints is like serving a 5-star meal Gordon Ramsay cooked on a paper plate.
Once you have selected your specified number of images, our retoucher will produce the final images. A fee of $75 applies for any additional images. -

(You will be invoiced for the full amount at the time of your booking confirmation)
If you require/have requested our professional makeup artist, you can select the option in our online scheduling program and pay for it along with your session fee. Should you decide to hire our Hair and Makeup team at a later date, a separate invoice will be sent to you for payment to Daniel Sommer Photography.
